Cause and Effect – this structure is used to illustrate how one or more events caused or had an effect on succeeding events. This might be used in how-to books, memoirs, history books, and biographies. Sequence – work presented in an order of chronological events. Some genres that work well with this structure are memoirs, biographies, and travel guides. This type of structure may be difficult for people who rely on memorization to remember what they read. Readers who enjoy this kind of structure are often people who are imaginative and like to build detailed events in their minds. Often, this structure provides a lot of information and it’s up to the reader to determine what information they think is important and what information they can skim through. Description – this structure relies on a detailed description, often relying on a story format to provide an immersive experience for the reader. We’ve chosen to focus on what we consider the five primary nonfiction text structures and the genres they best support. Providing the information in a way that aids in reader comprehension is critical and picking the right structure depends largely on the target audience and the topic. Because if you remain angry, it will only hurt you on the inside.Text structure is the way a book is organized, and the organization of a book can be an important factor influencing the reader’s successful connection to and absorption of the material. In the end, try your best to have grace for those who frustrate you. And, if you have the spirit and the energy to do so, you can become an educator for polyamory to those who don’t understand it. If that statement feels at all accurate, then I’d say it could be helpful to find any subcultures you identify with and start making connections with peers. So, a better community does exist it may just look different than you imagined. The good news is that there are many gay subcultures based in the gay counterculture. And expecting those who live in gay mainstream culture to jive easily with those in gay counterculture is, unfortunately, a bit idealistic (another lesson I learned personally). Polyamory is a “fringe concept.” It is counter to mainstream culture. Being poly is seen as a choice, even if it is what feels very natural to us. People who have disabilities are rarely viewed as choosing to have a disability. We have to do it with a sense of compassion for their lack of awareness (which is not always easy).įor the aspect of being poly, this is still a matter of people fearing what they don’t understand, but it plays out a little differently. And we can’t approach with anger and frustration (a mistake I see a lot nowadays). I learned this as an HIV positive person. And the solution is always the same: education, education, education.īut it’s not enough to want people to be educated, you have to do the educating. As dumb as these excuses are, they are what we have to work with. They worry they will say the wrong thing, so it’s just easier to avoid it altogether. Some common reasons people struggle with people with disabilities is that (they assume) seeing this person will make them feel awkward or sad. 
Because we (as gays) live in a marginalized community, we have a higher expectation that our own community wouldn’t marginalize others.
And I imagine the hurt of it stings a little differently for gay people with disabilities. Unfortunately, our own community just mirrors it.
So, this is a huge issue in society at large. If you google this, there is article after article about how people struggle to interact with those living with disabilities. It goes back to that classic reason for all marginalized communities: people fear what they don’t understand. People’s poor reactions to those living with disabilities isn’t so much a gay problem, it is a human problem. This scenario is loaded with so much worth discussing that it could fill a thesis. It is going to be difficult to answer such a powerful question in a simple Q&A.
